What a testnet is
A testnet is a public network that mirrors a blockchain project's real ("main") network, but uses tokens that have no market value, specifically so developers — and, for many projects, the wider community — can test software under real network conditions without real financial stakes. That is the network's actual documented purpose. The Ethereum Foundation's own explanation of development networks covers this in detail for one major example, and the same basic purpose holds for testnets run by other projects.
Running a node on a testnet means running a piece of software that participates in that network — validating transactions, storing state, relaying messages between other participants, depending on what the specific project's software does. This is a real, useful thing to do: it is how projects find bugs and measure real-world performance before launch.
What "farming" adds to that
Some projects, at their own discretion, later distribute tokens to addresses or node operators that participated in their testnet — an "airdrop." "Node farming" or "airdrop farming" is the practice of running a testnet node specifically because a future airdrop is possible, not just because you want to help test the software.
A crypto airdrop, in general terms, is a token distribution a project uses for reasons like user acquisition, community building, and decentralizing who holds its token — it is a deliberate choice a project makes, not a mechanical consequence of a testnet existing. Two testnets can look identical from a node operator's seat and have completely different outcomes: one project airdrops tokens to testnet participants, another does not, and a third has not decided or has not said.
What this site will and will not claim
This site's standing rule, stated in full elsewhere in the project, is short: hint-level language only, and every incentive statement carries a source URL. In practice that means:
- If a project has publicly stated something about rewarding testnet participants, a guide states that, links to where the project said it, and labels it as what it is — a project statement, not a confirmation from this site.
- If a project has said nothing, no guide invents a reason to run its node beyond "this is a real testnet and running it is a real, useful thing to do."
- No guide states an expected token amount, a dollar value, or a historical airdrop size as if it predicts this one. Past airdrops from other projects are not evidence about a specific current testnet, and presenting them as if they were is exactly the kind of unsourced expectation-setting this site exists to avoid.
If a sentence about incentives cannot be traced to a specific thing a project said, in public, the sentence gets cut. That rule applies to this page as much as any guide.
Why run a node at all, then
Set the airdrop question aside and the case for running a testnet node still holds: you learn to operate real node software, on a network where a mistake costs nothing, before doing it anywhere real value is at stake.
